Community Sport
& Recreation
Our Community Sport & Recreation team works alongside West Auckland communities to strengthen how sport and active recreation are delivered, experienced and enjoyed.

We partner with clubs, codes, schools, churches and cultural groups to build strong foundations for participation, so people feel:
- welcome
- included
- supported
- and confident to take part in ways that work for them.
Our focus is on practical support that creates real change on the ground.

How we support clubs and communities
We work closely with community organisations to strengthen the systems that underpin great sport and recreation experiences, so clubs and community groups can focus on what they do best: bringing people together through movement and connection.
This includes support with:
- governance and planning
- volunteer development
- inclusion and accessibility
- creating positive, welcoming environments.

Growing new opportunities for play and movement
Across West Auckland, communities are constantly creating new ways to be active, from whānau-led events to recreation opportunities that reflect the culture, identity and aspirations of local people.
We support the growth of these ideas by:
- backing community leadership
- helping shape safe, inclusive environments
- and connecting groups with the right support to grow sustainably.

Supporting Asian communities in local sport and recreation
We work closely with Asian communities to support clearer, more confident pathways into local sport and recreation so participation feels accessible, safe and sustainable for all.
This includes:
- helping families understand how clubs and community sport operate
- connecting participants with welcoming environments
- supporting clubs to build cultural awareness and inclusive practice
- strengthening pathways for Asian volunteers and leaders.

Why this matters
Together, this mahi supports clubs, schools and community organisations to keep doing what they do best while creating more meaningful, accessible opportunities for people of all ages to move, connect and belong. Whether you're a club, school, community group or cultural organisation, we're here to walk alongside you.
