Healthy Active
Learning
Healthy Active Learning supports tamariki across West Auckland to move, learn, and belong every day in ways that reflect who they are and where they come from.

We work alongside 20 primary and intermediate schools, building on the great mahi happening to strengthen how movement, sport, culture, the arts, and wellbeing show up in everyday school life.
Each school leads its own approach. Our role is to walk alongside to support, connect, and grow what's already working, so well-being is not an “add-on” but part of how learning happens.

Supporting teachers, leaders and school communities
We partner with teachers and school leaders to:
- grow confidence in health and physical education
- strengthen decision-making around providers and programmes
- deepen connections between schools and their local communities

What tamariki experience
Through Healthy Active Learning, tamariki experience:
- more moments of play and movement
- opportunities for creativity and cultural expression
- stronger connections with their peers and teachers
- and the confidence to carry these experiences into their learning and relationships
These everyday moments shape long-term wellbeing.

A long-term partnership for lasting change
Healthy Active Learning is built as a long-term partnership that supports schools to keep doing what they do best — while creating even more opportunities for tamariki to feel:
- active
- connected
- and ready to learn
Across West Auckland, this mahi is helping create healthier, more supportive learning environments for current and future generations.

National and regional collaboration
Healthy Active Learning is a joint initiative between:
- Sport New Zealand
- Te Whatu Ora Health NZ
- and the Ministry of Education
